8 billion population on earth as a planet is too much? We
are going to touch this milestone on November 15. Most experts say the
over-consumption of rich residents is a bigger problem.
Natalia Kanem, head of the United Nations Population Fund,
said that 8 billion people is an important milestone for humanity. He praised
the increase in life expectancy and reduction in maternal and child mortality.
Kanem said, 'Although I understand, not everyone can
celebrate the moment. Some worry that our world is overpopulated. I want to say
here, the mere number of human lives is not a cause for fear.'
Is our number so high, which has become a burden for the
world? Many experts say, 'This is the wrong question. We should be looking at
the excessive consumption of the planet's resources by the richest among us,
rather than fears of overpopulation.'
Joel Cohen of Rockefeller University's Laboratory of
Populations told, 'Too many for whom, too many for what? If you ask me this
question, have I become too much (in number)? I don't think so.'
Joel Cohen says, 'The question of how many people the Earth
can carry has two sides—natural limits and our choices.'
The consequence of our choices is that mankind consumes far
more biological resources such as forests, land, than the planet can reproduce
each year. For example, excessive use of fossil fuels is leading to more carbon
dioxide emissions, which are responsible for global warming.
Cohen added, 'We are naive. We lacked foresight. we are
greedy We do not use the information we hold. Herein lie the choices and the
problems.'
