Bangladesh is showing maximum restraint with Myanmar: Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is now in London on a four-day visit to attend the state funeral of late British Queen Elizabeth II. Starmer met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her residence on Saturday.
Sheikh Hasina briefed the Labor Party leader on the growing burden on Bangladesh due to the prolonged presence of Rohingyas from Myanmar. They discussed the recent escalation of armed conflict near the border with Bangladesh. The Prime Minister noted that Bangladesh is exercising maximum restraint despite the spillover effects of the conflict within its territory.
Britain's opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer said, 'Bangladesh and the UK have an excellent relationship and this relationship has been strengthened by British citizens of Bangladeshi origin.'
According to Prime Minister's Press Wing, Sheikh Hasina reiterated her deep grief over Rani's death.
Sir Starmer thanked the Prime Minister for paying tribute to the Queen. They also recalled the meeting and personal relationship of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the former Prime Minister of Britain's Labor Party, Sir Harold Wilson.
The Prime Minister thanked the Labor Party leader for his speech on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary and Bangladesh's golden jubilee of independence.
Sir Starmer recalled his visit to Bangladesh in 2016 and his meeting with the Prime Minister at that time. He expressed satisfaction at the increasing number of people of Bangladeshi origin elected as representatives of the Labor Party across the UK. He said the Labor Party was working to support and encourage young leaders, which would attract more British-Bangladeshi youth.
The two leaders discussed the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly on the Global South.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a negotiated settlement of conflicts to protect common people worldwide from food, energy and financial insecurity. He suggested examining whether sanctions imposed in the wake of the war had a disparate impact on people in developing countries.
Both sides discussed the possible impact on bilateral trade due to ongoing inflationary pressures and cost of living crisis.
The Labor Party leader said he would continue to support cost-sharing with clothing manufacturers for large retailers in the UK and the West. Sir Starmer praised the Prime Minister's leadership in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. He reiterated the Labor Party's commitment to work with vulnerable countries like Bangladesh on climate change issues. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh appreciated the expansion of climate partnership between the two countries.
Later Lord Swaraj Pal of Marylebone paid a courtesy call on him. The senior member of the UK House of Lords reiterated his admiration for the Prime Minister's leadership. He expressed interest in furthering business and educational partnership between the two countries.
