Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (DG) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has been appointed as the next Inspector General (IGP) of Bangladesh Police. He will replace the current IGP Benazir Ahmed. Benazir Ahmed is retiring from the post of IGP on September 30. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun will perform this duty from that day.

Meanwhile M Khurshid Hossain has been appointed as Director General of RAB. He is currently serving as Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) of Police Headquarters. He will also take charge of this position on September 30.

Earlier this morning in a separate notification, IGP Benazir Ahmed is retiring on September 30. According to the notification, Benazir Ahmed completed his 59 years of age on September 30 and was retired from service as per the Public Service Act, 2018. In this situation, he will be on post-retirement leave from October 1 to September 30 next year (basically retirement).

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun will take over as IGP as the current IGP Benazir Ahmed's tenure ends on September 30. He served as CID chief before joining the post of RAB DG. This BCS eighth batch officer is scheduled to retire on January 11.

In view of the next election, there was a discussion inside and outside the police about whether the term of service of Benazir Ahmed will be extended in the contract or not. In this context, the issue of the US ban came into discussion.

Benazir Ahmed was appointed as IGP in April 2020. But took responsibility in May of that year. Benazir Ahmed was banned by the US as the former Director General of RAB.

On December 10 last year, the United States imposed sanctions on the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and seven former and current officers of the force for alleged serious human rights violations. As the former DG of RAB, Benazir Ahmed was also banned. Again, as the current DG of RAB, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has the same ban.

However, amid the ban, IGP Benazir Ahmed recently went to the United States to attend a conference of police chiefs at the United Nations. A six-member delegation led by Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and IGP Benazir Ahmed participated in the conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York from August 31 to September 1.
