After the intervention of the Supreme Court, the police filed a case in the case of the attempt to kill former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. Earlier, the Supreme Court warned that the Punjab Police would initiate legal proceedings automatically if they failed to file a case.
The provincial police have finally registered a case of
terrorism, reports Dawn. Naveed, the arrested suspect, has been made the main
accused in the case.
On Monday, Deputy Inspector Amir Shahzad filed the case under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. After a delay of three days, the case was filed.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has accused Prime Minister
Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and senior intelligence
officer Major General Faisal Nasir of being involved in the alleged conspiracy
to kill him. However, none of them have been named in the police case.
Senior government and military officials were named in a petition filed by PTI leader Zubair Khan Niazi in connection with the attack. This caused complications with the police.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court took exception to the delay in accepting
this case. At the same time, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Faisal Shahkar
directed him to take action within 24 hours if he wants to avoid facing
automatic legal process.
The Supreme Court made this comment during the contempt case against Imran Khan on charges of violence in the first round of long march on May 25 and violation of the pledge given by PTI to the court. Apart from the filing of the case, the Supreme Court made observations on a few issues.
Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said in the observation, 'Can't you see, this is
an attempt to kill a national leader?' At the same time, the police have been
directed to submit a written report to the Supreme Court regarding the action
taken during the filing of the case and post-investigation.
Imran Khan was attacked last Thursday in Wazirabad, Punjab during the second
round of long march demanding early elections. One person was killed.Imran
Khan, 14 people including some PTI leaders were shot dead.
Imran Khan was shot in the leg. After surgery, Imran Khan returned home from the hospital on Sunday. The PTI chairman also announced the start of the long march on Tuesday. However, it was later informed by the party that their program is starting again next Thursday.
