Amazon plans to lay off 10,000 workers
After Twitter and Meta, the American technology company Amazon is also planning major layoffs. About 10,000 workers in the corporate and technology sectors may be laid off.
According to a person related to Amazon's plan, the American
newspaper The New York Times says that the layoffs may begin this week. And if
it does, it will be the biggest layoff in the company's history.
A person involved told the New York Times that the exact
number of Amazon layoffs is not known. Can be done step by step rather than
cutting all at once. But laying off about 10,000 workers means laying off about
3 percent of Amazon's corporate workforce. Moreover, this figure represents
less than 1 percent of the company's total global workforce.
The company has a global workforce of over 1.5 million. They
work mainly on hourly basis. The related sources also said that the impact of
layoffs will be more on various device companies, including Amazon's voice
service Alexa, retail marketing department and human resources department. The
man spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak
publicly.
Amazon posted record profits during the coronavirus pandemic
as consumers shifted their focus to online shopping. Amazon doubled its
workforce in the past two years. But earlier this year, Amazon's growth slowed
to its lowest level in two decades. Amazon has seen a slight turnaround in
recent quarters. However, Amazon has warned investors that this growth may slow
down further.
Amazon spokesman Brad Glaser was contacted by The New York
Times about the layoff plans. However, he refused to comment on this.
Amid changes in business models and uncertain economic conditions,
the world's tech industry is witnessing layoffs. Recently, the head of the
American car manufacturer Tesla, Elon Musk, after buying the ownership of
Twitter, reduced the number of employees of the company by half.
Last week, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and
Instagram, announced layoffs of 11,000 workers. This number is about 13 percent
of the total workforce of the organization.
