For sale are the rights to the game about Chaplin, but what will be in it
The Chaplin family's only request for the game was to tell
only the original story, without elements such as 'violence, gender and caste
discrimination'.
A Canadian game company has bought exclusive rights to create video games based on the works and preferences of legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin.
This director of 'The Great Dictator', 'Modern Times' fame
was equally skilled in acting as well as writing the story of many
movies. His character 'The Tramp' is still considered one of the most
iconic characters in the world of comics.
Chaplin is now admired by those in the film world who once despised his work. His various old clips and even entire movies on YouTube still attract contemporary audiences.
The Chaplin family's only request for the game was to tell only the original story, without elements such as 'violence, gender and caste discrimination'.
"The point of Chaplin's appeal is that if you show a
group of 10-15-year-olds any of his films, it will still make them
laugh." -- said Robert Young, co-founder of Be Different Games.
"What he did, the way he acted, the way he expressed himself and the way he moved, makes everyone laugh even today. They still enjoy watching them…so, it would be good to have it as a game.”
However, the big question now is how Chaplin's character
will make it into a video game. Because the people associated with it have
not been seen doing much except laying the foundation stone of the game.
Yang considers any of his projects to be 'social impact'
video games. The games are being developed with the help of Indie Asylum,
a Montreal gaming subsidiary.
"We've waited five years to talk to his family...and it's more about aligning our values with them than discussing royalties." -- said Yang.
He also said that the idea that only old people watch
Chaplin's movies is wrong. Because, every year more than 20 million
viewers watch Chaplin's movies on YouTube, who are between the ages of 15 and
35.
"No video game has ever been made with this intellectual
property." --says Christopher Chancey, co-founder of Indie Asylum.
However, his assumption is wrong. Because, in 1988, an American game maker US Gold brought a 'Chaplin' game for the MS-DOS operating system.
The older game is somewhat unusual, much like Lionhead's
Hollywood-style 'The Movies' game predecessor. Gamers could play the game
as Chaplin's animated character in various 'scenes' dressed as
tramps. Later, those scenes would be edited together into a movie, which
the gamer could choose to accept or reject.
As PC Gamer reports, the game is still intriguing despite its time. Its gameplay makes sense.
Chancey speculates that the pandemic has created an appetite
for games that are outside of the traditional genre.
"Life was so stressful for a while that playing various
dark video games with adult themes added to the anxiety."
He also added that a possible Chaplin game could also be
created around the disparity between the rich and the poor.
Although the matter is surprising, given the hints from the
game developed on the DOS operating system, it is not impossible. However,
it will be challenging for developers to create a game that captures the
essence of the timeless character's various gestures and makes whatever the
main character does actually be fun. Because the best comedian ever!
While there aren't many expectations for the game, PC Gamer suggested that instead of associating an iconic character like Chaplin with blockchain, make a good game based on his work.
