Good harvest in Jume, paddy harvesting festival is going on
Jumchasi Paltan Joy Tripura of Khagrachari's Dighinala border neighborhood, Patramohan Tripura said, We are dependent on jum. Apart from paddy, we have cultivated various types of vegetables including turmeric, marfa, maize. Compared to the last time, this year there is a better yield. Paddy has improved due to good rains. But we don't get any kind of support from the government.
Jumias want government incentives besides fertilizers, seeds for jum cultivation. The Agriculture Department has recommended sowing of modern varieties of seeds to increase the production of Jum. However, agricultural scientists have emphasized on modern methods of jum cultivation instead of traditional jum to increase jum production. Hill Agriculture Research Center is doing research to increase the yield of jum. Jum production will increase if eco-friendly jum cultivation in modern method.
The chief scientific officer of the Hill Agricultural Research Institute. Md. Altaf Hossain said that farming should be done conservatively in hilly areas. Cannot be cultivated on excessively steep hills. Crops that require additional digging cannot be cultivated. If soil erosion is prevented, fertility will increase and jum yield will also increase.
This time in Khagrachari, the target of jum cultivation has been fixed on 1920 hectares of land, but jum has been cultivated on 1780 hectares of land. Production target is 2611 MT.
Kishore Kumar Majumder, Deputy Director of Khagrachari Agriculture Extension Department, said that due to good rainfall in the district, the yield of jum has been good. Jum farmers have also come under government incentives. He also said that at least 4,000 farmers in Khagrachari are dependent on jum cultivation.
