Assam Police Director General Bhaskarjyoti Mohant said that the 17 Bangladeshi nationals who were arrested last Saturday in Biswanath district of North Assam had come to India to participate in a religious campaign. On Sunday night, he said, these people had come to visit India with tourist visas, but they were arrested for participating in religious campaigns.
The Assistant Embassy of the Government of Bangladesh in Kolkata has taken notice of the matter and the concerned officers are said to be looking into the matter.

Mohant said that many of them came to India with visas for medical treatment but participated in religious campaigns. According to Assam Police, the 17 Bangladeshi nationals entered Assam through Cooch Behar in West Bengal on September 13.

No statement has been received from the Bangladeshi citizens yet.

In Assam and Barak Valley, speakers from Bangladesh are invited to address religious meetings or jalsa. Assam Director General of Police has admitted that this practice has been going on for a long time. If this practice has been going on for a long time and if the speakers are not involved in radical or militant activities, then why they were suddenly arrested, it is not yet clear from the police.

At least 42 people have been arrested in Assam in the last more than six months for their alleged involvement in various terrorist activities. Government-funded madrassas have been closed. Four privately funded madrasas have been demolished so far.
