Facebook should compensate Rohingya: Amnesty
Amnesty International said Facebook should pay compensation
for spreading misinformation and hate speech against the Rohingya
online. Today Thursday, Amnesty has made this comment in this report,
according to the news agency AFP.
The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim minority, fled to
Bangladesh in 2017 in the face of persecution by Myanmar's military
rulers. Millions of Rohingya are currently living in refugee camps in
Bangladesh.
Victims' groups and rights activists say Facebook's
algorithms have fueled violence and fueled disinformation and hate speech.
Amnesty said in their report, 'Many Rohingya have tried to
report anti-Rohingya content through Facebook's report function. But it
didn't help. As a result, hate speech on Facebook reaches a large number
of people in Myanmar. '
Amnesty said the 'Facebook Papers', released in October
2021, showed Facebook executives knew the site promoted hatred against ethnic
minorities and other groups.
Rohingya representatives from the United States, Britain and
the OECD group of advanced economies have already filed three lawsuits against
Facebook. The cases are said to be in accordance with Facebook's
Responsible Business Conduct guidelines.
In a lawsuit filed in California last December, Facebook's
parent company Meta is seeking $150 billion in compensation for Rohingya
refugees.
"Meta has refused to pay compensation to the
Rohingya," Amnesty said. This is a company that is completely
disconnected from the reality of human rights. '
The human rights group has called on Facebook to step up its
oversight of anti-human rights incitement.
Facebook, meanwhile, has pledged to restructure its values
and operations in response to pressure from misinformation, particularly
about politics and elections.
