Gunmen shot and killed six police officers in the northern
Mexican state of Zacatecas on Wednesday local time. The news agency AFP
reported the information with reference to the authorities.
Five officers were shot dead during training at a sports
center in Calera da Victor Rosales, the Zacatecas state government said.
Two other law enforcement officers were shot after arriving
at the scene, according to a statement.
One of them died.
Zacatecas Governor David Monreal condemned the incident as a
'cowardly attack'. Apart from this, he expressed his condolences to the
family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
According to AFP reports, violence in Zacatecas has
increased in recent years. Experts say the two gangs are often at war here
as a lucrative drug-smuggling route into the United States.
In 2006, the Mexican government deployed the military to
fight drug traffickers. Since then, more than 340,000 people have been
killed across the country.
