Who is the next president of the Congress outside the Gandhi family

One of the oldest political parties in the subcontinent, cornered in the politics of Rata, is going to undergo major changes under the leadership of the Congress. After more than 20 years, someone from outside the Gandhi family can become the president of the party. So far, the leadership battle has pitted Ashok Gehlot, a Gandhi family loyalist, and Shashi Tharoor, known as a reformist.

According to NDTV news, former Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor first expressed his desire to contest for the post of Congress president. For most of the last 25 years, either Sonia Gandhi or her son Rahul Gandhi held this position.

Shashi Tharoor is one of the 23 leaders of the G-23 group of Congress, who wrote to Sonia Gandhi in 2020 seeking radical reforms of the Congress. They blamed the inaction of the leadership for the poor state of the party.

Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi on Monday afternoon after returning from a health check-up abroad. This leader got his consent to fight in the party elections on October 17.

A few hours later, Ashok Gehlot's candidacy for the post of president was announced. The struggle for leadership has accumulated. This chief minister of Rajasthan is known to be a staunch loyalist of the Gandhi family. A few days ago, he was pressuring Rahul Gandhi to return to the post of Congress president. Ashok Gehlot can get the support of those who are in favor of Rahul's return and the current leadership status of the party.

Congress legislator Jairam Ramesh, who is in charge of party communications, said, 'Whoever wants to contest is free to do so and is welcome. This is the consistent position of Congress and Rahul Gandhi. It is an open, democratic and transparent process. Competition does not even require consent from anyone.'

Filing of nominations for the post of president will begin within three days. This election is being held in the background of resignation of several important leaders. Last in this list is senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. Following him, most of the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir resigned.

Sonia Gandhi was the president of Congress for 19 years. In 2017, he left the responsibility to his son Rahul. Rahul resigned in 2019 after the party lost its second consecutive general election.

Then Sonia Gandhi took over as interim president. However, the crisis could not be avoided. The party lost one Rajya Sabha election after another. There is a demand for a massive change in leadership.
