Police baton in protest against attack on Barkatullah, 5 injured
It has been alleged that the police batoned a protest march taken out in Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali to protest against the attack on BNP Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu. The incident took place at Chaumuhani Bara Pole area of Begumganj upazila around 9 pm on Saturday. At least five people, including the vice president of the upazila BNP, were injured in the incident. Apart from this, the police arrested three workers of Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal from the spot.
According to eyewitnesses and party leaders-workers, a group of leaders-workers of Begumganj Upazila BNP and allied organizations took out a protest march against the attack on BNP leader Barkatullah in Bipulasa market of Manoharganj upazila of Comilla around 9 pm on Saturday night. When the procession came out from the front of Chaumuhani public hall, crossed the Feni-Chaumuhani highway and reached the Chaumuhani Bara Pole area, a group of policemen dispersed the leaders and workers by beating them with batons from behind. At that time, at least five leaders-activists including upazila BNP vice-president Mofizur Rahman alias Dipus (55) were injured in the police baton. The other four injured are Jubo Dal leader Dawooder Rahman alias Farhan (24), TI Sujan (25), Ashraful Haque alias Nadi (25) and Abdullah Al-Raqib (24).
Eyewitnesses said that after the baton, the police arrested three workers of Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal while running away from the scene and the surrounding area. They are Md. Sajib (38), Morshed Alam (38) and Md. Shimul (26).
Upazila BNP President Kamakhya Chandra Das strongly condemned the attack on BNP's protest march., he said that BNP Vice Chairman Barkatullah was attacked in Comilla by the terrorists of Jubo League and Chhatra League, affiliated organizations of ruling party Awami League. BNP workers took out a peaceful protest march against the attack. But the police lashed BNP's march without any reason and arrested three leaders and workers. At that time, Kamakhya Chandra Das claimed that five leaders and workers of BNP and allied organizations were injured in the police attack.
When asked, Mir Jahedul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, denied the allegation of lathicharge in the BNP procession and said that the BNP workers suddenly took out a militant procession at night. Police chased the marchers and dispersed them due to fear of vandalism in the city. However, the incident of baton did not happen at this time. Police arrested three leaders-activists from the spot. The process of taking legal action in this regard is underway.
